Mary’s life which combined prayer and receptivity to God with active service makes her an appropriate patron for Carmelites as they live their particular blend of contemplation and action. Mary has frequently been associated with Mt Carmel and the first hermits dedicated their little chapel to her. They became known as the ‘Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel’ and today the Order continues to honour her under the title ‘Queen of Carmel’.
