Joint Message from the Carmelite General Councils
Every three years, the two General Councils of Carmelite Friars, O.Carm. and O.C.D., meet for a time
of prayer, reflection and fraternal sharing together. This year the meeting took place in Dublin in
May and was particularly special because it was the last time the Councils will meet under the
leadership of priors general Fr Fernando Millán Romeral O.Carm and Fr Saverio Cannistrà OCD
before the next General Chapters take place.
At the end of the meeting, the two Councils published this joint message on the theme “Baptized
and sent: the Church of Christ on Mission in the World”. It considers the importance of mission for St
Thérèse of Lisieux, who became patron saint of the missions despite never leaving the enclosure of
Carmel, and for Blessed Titus Brandsma who lived out his missionary calling even in the midst of the
horror of Dachau.
